I love having creative boys! Our theme this week was birds. We read studied them, read about them and painted them. A friend told us about the Decorah Eagle webcam. We enjoyed watching the eagles. You can see them too: http://m.ustream.tv/decoraheagles (Go check 'em out!) We also worked on our Singapore math and Explode the Code series. We have all been battling colds this week, so we weren't able to complete all of our projects, but it was still a fun week. Here's a peek at some of the things we did this week: A few of the books we read. The book in the middle was my favorite. The Fantastic Okapi's favorite is the book that's on the couch cushion. For Social Studies, we read the story of John James Aubudon. The Fantastic Okapi like how he signed his name JJA. We also used maps to talk about places birds migrate to. We had fun making bird treats. Mr. Mustard Seed joined the fun and helped them build a bird house. Birds With Shapes tested their ability to follow directions. Overall, they did a really good job. The Fantastic Okapi's bird is on the top. The Green Owl's is on the bottom. After they finished their birds, they went crazy coloring the background! Heh. The Fantastic Okapi wrote a letter to his new penpal in Rhode Island. Before writing, he read about the state in his state book. I started using Explode the Code for spelling. It's working out REALLY well. I create our spelling list based on Explode the Code's words for the week. On the first day, the Fantastic Okapi reads the words, draws the word, spells the word and writes the word. I cut his words apart and use them as flash cards for the week. Because the words coincide with Explode the Code, he gets extra practice learning them. So far, it's been pretty super! We had a lot of fun with art! The boys worked really hard on their projects, and our new bulletin board is f.a.b.u.l.o.u.s! The templates for the birds can be found on this blog: http://learncreatelove.com/ I definitely recommend checking it out- it's bursting with creative fun! I decided to try something new this week. I encouraged the Fantastic Okapi to write a report on his favorite bird. He chose the Peregrine Falcon. We had fun researching it. After we finished our research, we created a little presentation. He REALLY enjoyed this project. I hope to make it a weekly part of our homeschool. In other news... The dogs have been enjoying time outside. We haven't been outside as much as I have hoped, mainly because of the colds we've been fighting off... but we have managed to have a little fun in the sun! Er, shade. (The sun has been pretty MIA!) And here is my 3rd student.
He likes to sit in this chair while we do school. True story! I hope ya'll are having a super week! Be sure to check back next week; we'll have adventures to share AND the Green Owl will turn FIVE!
